Carl J. Reinhard started the restaurant in 1951 at 95 South Paint Street (next to St. Mary's Catholic Church).
Prior to Carl's ownership of the building, it was known as the "NCL", an acronym of "Nice Clean Lunch" and was
also the first letter of the last names of the three men who owned and operated the restaurant, Nagley, Conrad
and Landrum. The original building (has the counter and stools) was showcased in the New York's World Fair in
April, 1939. It was purchased at the World's Fair by Roman Gerber (a Chillicothe resident) and brought to
Chillicothe. Mr. Gerber reassembled the building and the "NCL" restaurant opened in 1940.
Carl and his wife, Alice, kept it a small business specializing in freshly made hamburgers, homemade soups
and daily specials. In October, 1981, Carl retired leaving the business to his daughter and son-in-law, Carla
and John Goodwill. In September, 1999, Lloyd Harmon took the business over and it closed in 2000 and was slated
for demolition.
Carl's Townhouse had been enjoyed by many residents of Chillicothe over the year and had special meaning to
Joe Malone. Joe and his friends stopped by frequently, and Carl was his bus driver in grad school. In July,
2000, Joe and his family purchased the building for $1.00 and agreed to move the building from its location
at 95 South Paint Street (3-4 block away) to it's current location, 95 West Second Street. After much planning
and investment, the building was lifted and transported through the streets of downtown Chillicothe at 3:00
in the morning on August 23, 2000 to where you are seated today. The building was placed on its new foundation
in 2001; moving the building, restoration and expansion took two years to complete and Carl's Townhouse re-opened
on Columbus Day, October 15, 2002.
Carl's Townhouse is truly a "Chillicothe landmark" with special character and continuing the tradition of a
nostalgic diner from a simpler time in history- we hope you enjoy the food and your visit.
Thanks for stopping in and come back soon.
